Preparing a roadway !

After that the colliery's shafts have been built, it is necessary to prepare the roadways to reach the coal seams. For preparing the roadways different methods and machines are used. The machine shown in this picture has a weight of nearly 100 tons. The part of the machine that cannot be seen in the picture is a long arm with rotating rolls at its end. On these rolls lots of chisels are fixed. The arm can be moved into several directions so that the typical roadway profile can be cut off the surrounding rocks. Each of those machines is able to prepare eight metres of roadways per day.

The machine's part that can be seen in the picture is able to mount the rings of metal directly after having prepared the roadway by cutting off the rocks. These rings avoid that pieces of rock can fall down from the roadway's ceiling and endanger the miners working or moving along there.
