This photo shows how a shearer was used in an Austrian colliery
in the Salzach region. The heavy chain that is clearly visible was used for
pulling the shearer along the coal face. Additionally the shearer was led by a hardly
visible rail. The shields for the miners' safety with their hydraulic pillars
looked quite modern, yet.
