Fototour Radbod colliery !

This time on 08.05.2003 my way led me to Radbod colliery in Bockum-Hoevel (Germany), one of Hamm's suburbs. This colliery consists of three shaft towers (over the shafts 1, 2 and 5) in a row - which is quite unique in the whole Ruhr area. Two of these shafts have been filled up yet, the third - shaft 5 - is still in use for hoisting and opens the way to a roadway of six kilometers to Radbod 6 shaft. This roadway is used to reach the coal field called Donar. The 100 million tons of high quality coking coal hopefully represent the Ost colliery's long future. Radbod colliery rose to a sad fame on November 12th in 1909 when 349 miners lost their lifes during a firedamp explosion.

The machine that can be seen in the photos is something very special: In earlier times it was driven by steam and stands unchanged until today - only the steam has been replaced by compressed air. Additionally there are some photos showing the machine at shaft 1, that is from 1907 - pitily thieves have stolen different parts from this machine, yet. This time I will not comment on the the pictures too much and they will be shown in the sequence they have been taken in.

Please click on the photos' small versions in order to enlarge them and to get the corresponding background information. ATTENTION: The pictures' explanations can now be found UNDER the large versions.
